The History and Origin of Chess Sets by Jason Mamford
The history of chess dates back over 1500 years ago. It is believed to have originated from India before the 6th century AD and there after spread to Persia. As history would have it, Persia was conquered by Arabs and through that taken up by the Muslim community thus spreading to Southern Europe. It was not up to the 19th century that those modern chess tournaments were held, the first being held in 1886. Players such as Howard Staunton after whom the Staunton set arose and were regarded as the chess extraordinaire and are still revered.
In the olden days, chess sets were handmade from all available material but wood was the most common material used. The chess theory over the centuries also evolved and in the 20th century a world chess federation was formed. Over the years, chess has come to be accepted as an online game following the use of computers for analysis in the 1970’s when the first programmed chess games were available on the market, and thereafter, online gaming appeared in the mid 1990’s. Because it became a worldwide game, it has come to be known by various names and dialects in most languages around the world.
The Staunton chess set is one of the luxury wooden games that people can buy from the Jacques of London store. It is widely used and mostly so in competitions. The Staunton chess set is so named after Howard Staunton, an English chess master who promoted a standardized shaped and clearly distinguishable chess set called the Staunton pattern, which is used in competitions. He is considered to be one of the greatest chess players of his time and went on to write books about the game, commentate during tournaments, and even had a few competitions named after him.
In Italy, the game is referred to as scacchi, in Dutch, it is schaken, In Ethiopia it is called senterej, and in Mongolia, it is called shatar. In the Middle East and Russia, it is referred to as shakhmaty. It is possible to see that chess can be classified as a unifier of nations because no matter what language they speak, as long as the rules are the same, language differences will not matter at all.
The Jacques of London is a shop opened back in 1795 by Thomas Jacques where all types of chess sets are sold and has been operated by his descendants all through, and has basically maintained their original standards of quality.
